So we're down to the last 2 weeks before the MS150, and I've kicked myself into gear. Yesterday I biked at our apartment gym for about 6 miles. I did the hills route, and it was a good wake up as to what I can expect as I get closer to Austin. Today I did the random route which was a bit of a break but still helped build "seat time" and leg memory. I did about 5.6 today and am hoping to get a ride in tonight.
What was most entertaining about today's workout though was that I decided to go without glasses or contacts. Which means I could not really see anything in focus the entire time. I thought this would be fine, but it made for some interesting observations.
When I walked in there wasn't anyone else in the gym yet, so I sat down and had a quiet workout, looking out the window toward the pull. Just then, a man walks in wearing a gray wife beater tank and navy workout pants. By his strut I could tell he was an avid visitor to this gym, but when he turned on the TV, it sounded like he turned it to cartoons. Now, I was in the back and completely unable to see anything but blobs of beige on the screen with some red. So my assumption was that it was The Flintstones.
Mr. Workout panted on the treadmill for a bit, then headed over near me to do some free weights. Grunting and groaning, he then transitioned to the chest press, getting close enough for me to make out a wrinkled forhead and jaunt face. He was in fact older than I had initially thought by his strut. He was probably 35-40....and he was watching the Flintstones.
Now, this would be a great story if I just left it there, but to tell you the truth, after listening to this 50's style commentary coming from the TV for 20 minutes, I began to think that maybe it was a sitcom afterall. I hadn't heard any "Yabadabadooos!" or Fast Feet Cars, so I walked up to the tv as close as I could without revealing that I was currently blind. I then realized disappointedly that it was not Fred Flintstone but some guy named Fred on a 50's style sitcom. Maybe it was even a movie.
Still entertained that it wasn't Sports or Spike, I left laughing to myself as Mr. Workout's grunts faded with the closing of the gym door.
