Rent

I've always loved the song "Seasons of Love" from the musical Rent, but when it came to watching the movie had heard mixed reviews. I confess I was afraid of what I might see, but I decided to watch it tonight so I could know the true story behind the music. Although some things were hard to watch, it touched me in the depiction of the AIDS epidemic and the family that the friends struggling with it created. It was a daily life completely different than my own, but I could relate to their humanity, their heartbreak, and their need for community.

One of the songs was about "living in America" and how they were just making it day to day and struggling to keep up with our cultural demands of what was expected and shoved upon them. And at the end of the song they said, "But I'm not alone". It was a comfort for them, and what a comfort it is for all of us. I believe that that desire to not be alone comes from our Creator. I feel that our friends can be there for us and that there is a purpose in that, but more than anything, knowing a God who truly loves you and longs to have you truly know Him, is what "not being alone" is all about.
